JC Simmons
& Associates is a Victoria based venture capital
firm focusing on emerging growth businesses. We invest
in small companies with
unique products or services, sound management and the
strong desire to grow. We conduct our investment activities
by way of 3 separate approaches:
- Direct
Investment
Acting
as principal, JC Simmons & Associates makes direct
investments in early stage or emerging growth companies.
As a sole, direct investor, we seek to make individual
investments of up to $500,000.
- Private
Investment Syndication
For companies with capital needs greater than
$500,000 but less than $3,000,000, we will lead investment
syndications. Typically, syndicate partners will be
high net worth individuals who will invest with us,
as principal, to meet the investee company's financing
requirements.
- Corporate
Finance Consultative Services
When corporate finance requirements exceed $3,000,000,
we are available to assist selected companies in the
arrangement of private placements of debt and/or equity
on a fee for service basis.
Although
we have no desire to be involved in the daily operations
of the companies in which we invest, we are an active
venture capital partner. In addition to providing capital,
we become active board members and provide our business
experience and knowledge to enable entrepreneurs to
accelerate the realization of their business goals.
Investment
Opportunities
Along with our main investment approach mentioned above,
we have additional investment opportunities through
the following investment vehicles:
- Venture
Capital Corporations
JC Simmons & Associates formed and administers two shareholder managed venture capital corporations ("VCC's") which seek to invest in early stage companies that meet the requirements of the British Columbia Small Business Venture Capital Act.
The first VCC, University Technologies 1 (VCC) Inc. was created for the principal purpose of investing in technology companies formed through the technology transfer initiatives of the University of Victoria's Innovation and Development Corporation. However, this VCC will invest in other technology companies that meet our investment criteria.
This fund has made several investments and divestments since its creation in 2000 and is actively seeking additional investment opportunities.
The second VCC, University Technologies 2 (VCC) Inc., was formed in 2005 with the purpose of investing in early stage companies in British Columbia that meet the requirements of the BC Small Business Venture Capital Act. Information about the Venture Capital Corporation program in BC is available at the following web site: www.ecdev.gov.bc.ca (Ministry of Economic Development; Investment Capital Branch)
This fund is actively seeking additional investment opportunities.
